A collection of photographs from my first solo exhibition, PHILIPPINES
I was born in the Philippines and raised there until I was 14 years old, when my family moved to the United States. I am grateful for the opportunities afforded me in this great country that I would not have gotten in the land of my birth. Still, I’ve always felt a yearning for my homeland, which grew stronger after I left the military.
In the summer of 2013, I returned to the Philippines to take care of my dying uncle, but sadly I was too late. Grieving and restless, I traveled by myself around the country, rediscovering my roots. I visited places from my childhood, where I was reunited with family and old friends. I went to corners of the Philippines I’ve never been to before, where I discovered distant relatives and made new friends. I fell in love.
I spent the next two summers exploring the Philippines with my wife. I witnessed rapid changes in many places, yet stagnation in others. Such contradictions and contrasts were everywhere. Everyday I learned something new, yet everyday I also realized that there is still much more to see and learn.
This is only the beginning. I look forward to continuing this journey of enlightenment for many years to come. Through my photographs, it is my hope that you can join me as well.
